B2ST 2014 COMEBACK – Good Luck 비스트
Its been a year since I posted a review about Beast and now I am hard pressed to think of a time when BEAST has disappointed me with a comeback. Their latest is right on par. BEAST is back with their new song and album, “Good Luck.” This song reminds me of why I like BEAST while still recognizing that they grow, musically, with each comeback. “Good Luck” is very different from their previous single, “Shadow.” While I love “Shadow” because it was and still is very different from anything else going on in Kpop, “Good Luck” is more my style.
Before getting into the song I’ll go over the music video itself. I don’t know if BEAST uses a variety of MV directors but I’m thinking they usually use the same one, because most BEAST MVs have the same camera feel to them. The concept is mostly performance with a bit of acting here and there. The acting scenes reflect the theme of the song which is a relationship “breaking up,” with scenes of the members leaving a girl or by themselves looking distraught. The performance scenes are great; they are done in a couple of different settings. While both settings are on a soundstage, one has the look of being on the street. The color themes for this video match the mood of the song well; dark while mixing in some strong, bright colors, it just works.
The choreography is not just great, it is wonderful, perfect, you name it, and it’s it. This choreography is the best they’ve done since “Fiction” and that is saying a lot. It’s more than just the point choreography; it’s every single move and step. Their choreographer went all out and really crafted a dance that is perfectly matched for this song and the BEAST member’s skills.
The lyrics of this song, as I mentioned before, are about the breaking up of a relationship. I would like to clear up any possible misunderstanding, first off. In English, in this context, saying “good luck” in this fashion is not a positive expression. Saying “good luck” in this context is bitter and somewhat passive aggressive. If you (for the non-Korean speakers) read the translation it is very clear that this is the desired effect. This is not a happy “good luck” that they are saying, this is closer to saying “screw you for leaving me, you better be happier without me since you put me through this misery.”
With that cleared up, the lyrics are great. There is no shortage of love songs and break up songs in Kpop, but something about this one stands out. I think it’s the somewhat vindictive and bitter nature to the lyrics. As well, these lyrics to the up beat instrumental gives the feeling of while it’s a break up song, it’s also empowering. Empowering in the sense that yes, it’s sad but, it won’t be the end of the world.
All of the members look stunning in the MV. For some of the performance parts they are decked out in HBA clothing, which is very popular in Kpop right now. While Yoseob and Gikwang look great with their more natural hair coloring, Junhyung, Doojoon, Hyunseung, and Dongwoon are rocking died hair. I think Junhyung looks the best of all those with dyed hair; the bleach blonde really suits him. The one thing that I think is a little off is that Hyunseung looks like a weird tennis player. I guess if anyone would look a little weird it would be the 4D Hyunseung. Also, I don’t think Dongwoon has ever looked more handsome than he does in this MV; really take a look at him.
One little hidden meaning I caught in this MV is the image of the Last Supper. For Junhyung’s acting scenes he’s seated at the center of a long table, surrounded by posed women. This would seem to be just random, but the more you look at it, the more it begins to look like the Da Vinci painting. To top it off, one of the women breaks her pose and stabs Junhyung with a dinner knife. Someone call Judas? It may be a bit of a stretch, but it really stood out to me when I watched it. LOL
I am personally looking forward to either a Dance Version or a Dance Practice video. I would be pleased with both or just either of the two. Oh yes, this has to be wrapped up neatly and with a bow on top. So… SO BEAST!
FIGHTING BEAST!
